Instagram has a history of replicating features and tools from other social media apps. It’s no surprise that it is now copying TikTok’s key features. Replication has become an emerging social media trend. Any new application or tool introduced into the social media world becomes the main object of replication for other applications to limit the competition. Instagram is reportedly rolling out some new features that are similar to TikTok.
According to Wong, Instagram is introducing a new feature called Clips, inspired by TikTok. Similar to TikTok, Clips allows users to record a series of videos in one video Story, fine-tune speed and timer of videos, and overlay music on Clips. TikTok users have been steadily increasing in number making the application an emerging star. However, people tend to go back to using previously installed applications like Facebook where they have a network of friends.
This is where replicating and recreating comes in handy for Facebook, in this case through Instagram. With a massive number of Facebook users even in regions where other applications are not yet available Facebook can beat its competitors. Recreating other applications key features into their own app, making them available for everyone around the globe will more likely proliferate Facebook’s app growth.
This might work for Instagram, but will TikTok suffer?
Although Instagram hasn’t yet confirmed Wong’s findings, it has been observed that both Facebook and Instagram recreate features from their competing social media apps and integrate into their own platforms.
